Cannes

blogging in style

don't ask me why it took this long. but i just discovered the VIP room at this conference. and it is swwwwwannnky. it's on the beach with a whole wall of windows, wifi, an assortment of design within reach furniture and -- because it's france-- champagne. the bartenders are absurdly charming as well. apparently this is the place to park yourself at the MIPTV conference because everyone you want to talk to filters in at some point during the day. my heels are off and my feet are curled up on the white leather couch next to me as i blog. a european dude just walked by and said, "all you need is the TV, eh?" eh.

not that it's all champagne and couches in cannes. i have been doing *some* work today. i just filed a blog to yahoo about myspace and bebo's keynotes this morning. so i won't comment on it here until they post it. (don't want to scoop the guys who pay my bills! besides hasn't yahoo had enough grief today?) after that, joi ito spoke about creative commons-- and why it *should* be content makers BFF. he made a compelling case, but then again i'm a valley-ite. guessing people in the audience still just heard "MORE PERMISSIVE THAN COPYRIGHT. SCREW THAT!" hopefully not though. i filmed an interview with joi yesterday on the topic in the middle of the biggest cannes deal maker hot spot, the majestic hotel. it'll be on tech ticker before too long (i hope. literally fedexing tapes back. very very old media i'm afraid.)

and then i moderated a panel with Loic Le Meur, of Seesmic and le web (who is also kicking back in the VIP room. no champagne though. such a pro), Pascal Thomas of Orange and Wandrille Pruvot of Buzzcity. I had never heard of buzzcity, but it's pretty interesting. it's basically an internet content and ecommerce portal for people who only have ever used the internet via mobile phone.

Loic in particular was in rare form. not only did he mock my poor french at dinner last night, on stage he was snapping pictures as i talked, giving me shit for sxsw, and then giving buzzcity shit for talking up a noble game of bring the internet to poor countries then gouging them on ringtone fees. you can tell you're in europe when you moderate a panel on the future of social networking and everyone on it has a business with a strong mobile component. interestingly everyone's mobile phone rang. except mine. stupid treo that doesn't have a sim card.
